| The Cost of Doing Business - by Steve ''Heavy'' Haltom |

Okay, don’t get me started on whatever happened to $2 a gallon gas - or $1 a gallon gas - or even .69 cent a gallon gas. I spent $80 filling up my truck last week and I have to tell you I’m still suffering from sticker shock. While I don’t normally take travel expenses into account when heading out to the casino, I’d be lying to you if I said the price of gas hasn’t impacted my travel planning of late.
What does $4.15 a gallon gas mean to your casino play? Well, for DI’s it’s all part of the cost of doing business.
I sometimes joke about my card-counting AP pals who are so cheap they bring their own bottle of water with them to the casino so they won’t have to tip the cocktail server. These guys sweat every penny and count everything they spend en route to, inside, and on the way home from the casino as a business expense. On the other hand, many of these guys are full time pros who travel the country in search of the best game. Some live in Las Vegas, where you’d think one could find a decent game, and fly to obscure Indian casinos in Mississippi to play. Why? Because that’s where the games with the best odds are. By playing the best game they maximize their winnings - and subsequently their profit. I might also mention that most of these guys are black and purple chip bettors, which means they often get things like airfare comped. There’s a lesson in there, so let’s explore it a bit.
Click on "read more" at the top of this article for the rest of the story.
Obviously if you are a red or green chip bettor you’re probably not going to get your airfare comped. But if you are playing in a local casino where discretionary comps are still available you can sometimes score a comp for what’s known as “cab fare” or “gas money.” The key, of course, is to understand how the casino's comp system works and to maximize your return on investment. Then you can simply find a host and ask for the comp.
All casino comps are based on your theoretical loss. That means you don't have to lose to score a comp. You simply have to put in sufficient time at the tables to earn one.
Comps are based on a mathematical formula that multiplies your average bet times the number of decisions per hour times the number of hours you play. The casino evaluates your play and determines how "smart" of a gambler you are. From there a simple mathematical formula tells them what your theoretical loss is. The casino will then comp you a percentage of your theoretical. That comp may be in the form of a free room or hotel services, free food or slot play put on your card, or cash for gas money. But if you don't ask - you don't get. And remember, policies vary from casino to casino.
You can also do a little mental re-framing on the gas issue if that will work for you. On a typical run over to the local boats I’ll have $20 - $50 in free slot play or coupon cash I can pick up before stepping up to the tables. If I set that aside and don’t use it for session money I can walk with $20 - $50 in “gas money” that I “won.”
Do you have a playing partner you hook up with regularly? Ride sharing will cut the cost of travel in half. You might also look into the one-day bus junkets that run in many areas. The cost of these bus trips is minimal, and often the casino reimburses that cost in the form of free meals and slot play.
Of course, you could do like me. Use the high price of gas as an excuse to buy a “fuel efficient” motorcycle to ride. I figure that at $3.50 a gallon I’ll save enough driving the bike to pay for it in three years. Just don’t get caught in the rain.
Bottom line - the cost of doing business is the cost of doing business. If you find it eating into your profits you simply have to find a way to become more profitable. And the best way to do that is to hone your skills and be a disciplined player.
